restaurant & bar design
julius wiedemann / marco rebora (taschen 2014)
This book by Julius Wiedemann and Marco Rebora showcases 100 highlights of hospitality design put forward to the judging panel of The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, the world’s only awards dedicated entirely to this particular field. “Restaurants and bars offer architects and interior designers the opportunity to design for both style and entertainment. Aesthetics and function must come together to create ambiance and conviviality in a way that not only makes a bold first impression, but also secures a loyal following of regular customers” (taschen.com).
Julius Wiedemann studied graphic design and marketing, and was an art editor for digital and design magazines in Tokyo.
Marco Rebora founded The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards in 2008. He studied fashion design and marketing, and previous to founding the awards he created and ran the Neon restaurant in London.
I discovered this book the other day at the book shop at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour – and it reminded me of how it all began. My passion for interior design started many years ago when I caught myself on more and more occasions mentally ‘redesigning’ restaurants, bars and hotels I visited. “If only they changed …”, it came to my mind. “If only they removed that … and replaced it with …”, I thought. “By doing … they could really move this place to a completely different level”, slowly getting all excited, fidgety. And in extreme cases (I have not returned to those places as you can imagine): “Why would one possibly … ??”. I have started to quietly surveying and redesigning public spaces – and I am still doing and loving it.
The book showcases stunning designs captured in beautiful images with a very pleasing layout – a coffee table must for everyone who is interested in hospitality design and interior architecture.
